LIVEMOCHA!
13. August 2008 by Shannon.
(heehee, I can hear everyone saying “Huh?”)
Livemocha is a language learning website. We all know how desireable it is in today’s markets to be comfortable in more that one language… well, Livemocha provides support for six popular languages (English, Spanish, French, Hindi, German and Mandarin Chinese) and offers impressive and comprehensive lesson plans for each, including a full range of practical reading, listening, writing and speaking exercises.
The best part is that Livemocha makes it easy for you to learn on your own (and at your own pace) and connects you with a huge network of other students and native speakers to help you master your new language.
Now, understand, I am a BIG fan of Rosetta Stone language learning software… BUT I do realise that the cost can be very limiting for homeschoolers who are often making ends meet with only one income… so, here comes Livemocha… for FREE! I can’t say it’s EXACTLY the same thing, but where the they meet is in immersion and where Livemocha excells is in the practical conversation with others working towards the same goal… sometimes company makes the journey more pleasant.
SO, if you have been panicking over your teen’s “foreign language credit” - panic no more! Hop on over to Livemocha and set them up and let the learning begin! There - that’s one less thing on your planning To Do list! You’re welcome! *grin*
Blessings!

The Old SchoolHouse Magazine - DIGITAL!
12. August 2008 by Shannon.
I have a confession. I think one of my primary reasons for homeschooling my kids is that I am a closet book-a-holic. Well, it’s really anything with words in it actually… I was the kid reading the cereal boxes over breakfast trying to sound out the names of the interesting ingredients (which leads me to the question “why are we eating something that we can’t pronounce??” … but I digress.)
You see, I love books, magazines, newpapers, anything with words… BUT… my Darling Husband does NOT like the clutter of more than a few book cases in any given room. SO, I had to be creative… we spread the bookcases out around the house, never giving any room more than their “permitted” two bookcases (okay, I’ll admit, my dining room has three… but shhhh.. he hasn’t really noticed yet!). And even then my printed word habit was bulging at the seams… but then a glorious day! I was introduced to the E-Book!!!!! (there are not enough exclamation points in the world to express my joy! *wink*)… I could hide a whole LIBRARY in my computer… or collected on a few little, non-intrusive CDs… life was grand.
I never thought it could get better… but it DID - Now there are looks-like-the-real-thing eMagazines! And of course, my favourite kind of magazines are homeschooling related (duh!)… so you can imagine my delight to hear that The Old SchoolHouse Magazine was now being published in digital format… and not just a simple PDF file either… this was a whole new magazine reading experience!
To start with, there is a “pages” option which lays out the entire magazine in clickable thumbnails, just how I can imagine the editors would lay out the mock-up for the real magazine. It is so convenient to browse and click on whatever article (or advertisement!) catches your attention and *FLIP!* a digital page turns and there you are at that article, in full size and colour, ready to enjoy.
And if it wasn’t enough to browse the thumbnails of the articles, there is also a Search option which allows you to type in a keyword and it pops up a list of all the titles, pages and even a little “sample” of the article it’s refering you to… it’s like searching on a real search engine! Talk about your incredible time saver when you are trying to find that one article that you just had to show a friend… very helpful!
On the technical end (as if just being an interactive eMagazine wasn’t enough to impress my socks off), there is a “settings” option where you can choose how you would like to view your magazine (one page at a time, two page spread, fit to width, fit to height, zoomed in close *for those of us with reaaaallly bad eyesight?*) and…. here’s the kicker… it REMEMBERS your settings!!! How cool is that? One of my pet peeves is PDFs who hijack my other PDF settings by opening things not the way I want, and I am forced to WORK (okay, click one little button, but still.. my button-clicking time is precious to me! LOL!) to fix it.
Can you tell how impressed I am?
Okay, onto the content side… because, although I am a card-carrying member of the cereal box readers club, I know that even the “neatest” of eMagazines isn’t worth a thing unless there is something worth reading in it. Well, rest easy… there are LOTS of facinating articles, ranging from schooling styles, learning styles, teaching tots to teaching teens… and LINKS GALORE! That’s another nice thing about the eMagazine - where there is a referral to a site, there is a clickable link… no more typing it in to your browser window only to find out you left out one obscure letter… this is an instant link. AND if you view the magazine online (I did, but it was slow loading on my dial-up connection, so I ended up downloading it to my computer) and like an article, you can even click a button and SHARE the article with your friends! Now that’s a community builder. Picture reading a fantastic article - passing it on to a couple of your best “over a cuppa tea” Homeschool Mommy friends - and *Voilà!* you have an instant conversation starter for the next time you all get together… (you know, in case you DON’T have something to talk about already…. grin!)
So… as you’ve probably gathered, I’m pretty excited about this new way to squeeze more words into my life (and these are those little ones I can hide away on a CD for safe keeping… so, my Sweet Man is happy - less bookcases - and *I* am happy - more words!). I wish ALL magazines offered this option…
… and one more thought: The Old SchoolHouse Magazine DIGITAL version is also a VERY environmentally friendly option - no trees were harmed during the downloading of the magazine! *big wink*
Blessings!

FREE STUFF ALERT!!!
18. June 2008 by Shannon.
Be sure to check out all the FREE STUFF over at currclick this week (not sure how long all these things will be free… ) including an Anne of Green Gables (my favourite book of all time) Unit Study, a TimeLine project, and oodles of notebooking pages!!! ALL FREE!!!!
Also, don’t forget the Quarterly Freebie at Hands of a Child, which right now is a fabulous unit on Zebras (anyone up to a summer safari without having to leave home?? *grin*).
There’s also lots to be had free at my other favourite lapbook company, Live and Learn Press…. they have a few freebies for those who sign up for a free membership and join their Yahoo group! Their lapbooks are incredibly attractive and well designed, and if you are using Apologia Science (the high school ones), they have designed fabulous support lapbooks for those course…. you should check those out for sure!!! Turn the Study Questions into a Study Session!
But if you can stand one more great lapbook stop… (haha, you’ll be as addicted as I am soon!!!), head on over to Knowledge Box Central. Their lapbook sets are quite thorough… their lapbook on The Human Heart is really great though… really!!! And they have lapbooks on interesting subjects (not typical “school” subjects) such as Modesty, Grandfather’s Wisdom, and Basic Cooking Skills. I love that they’s branched out into not so well trod areas to give us something fresh to work with, and I’m sure you’ll like them too!!
SO. Summer vacation is here for so many of you, why not sneak in some “school” stuff without letting the kids know they are doing it?!?! C’mon, you know you wanna… *wink* So snag yourself a great lap-e-book, print it up on some coloured paper (or not!), and grab a kid and have some fun cutting and pasting. You can even take these projects outside to work on, why not have a little quiet time under the picnic umbrella while at the beach (after all, you have to wait 30 minutes after your picnic lunch before you can go into the water, right? *grin*)?
However you use them, remember the Golden Lapbook Rule… FUN FIRST.
Blessings and Enjoy!

An *Icky* “Learning Moment”
5. June 2008 by Shannon.
Sometimes, as homeschool moms, we have to “suck it up” and “put on an interested face” so that our children can REALLY get to know God’s Kingdom… even the icky parts.. (or what *I* think are the icky parts anyhow… LOL!).
I’m speaking about BUGS. I do NOT like bugs. I know God made them, I know they are “facinating” and everything, but still.. ewwww!
SO, you can just imagine my “delight” when my 14 year old son comes home with THIS in a container:
Ya, um, that thing is as long as the palm of my hand (it was about 15 cms!!)!!! *shudder*
BUT… like a good homeschool mommy, I sucked it up and decided to take pictures, and videos, and show it off to my 5 year old son.. (okay, if HE comes home with one too.. then we might have to rethink this whole “learning moment” thing… !!!
Luckily my 3 year old was asleep.. she EATS bugs!!! *grin and shudder*
Okay… so this is what we found out about our little friend, “Millie”:
(From Wikipedia) Narceus americanus is a large North American millipede. It inhabits the eastern seaboard of the United States and southeastern Canada. It is one of the largest North American millipede species, reaching a length of four inches. When threatened, it releases a noxious liquid that contains small amounts of hydrogen cyanide and pigments that stain surfaces brown. This fluid may irritate eyes or skin and cause allergic reactions in venom sensitive people.
There was also this link: http://webs.lander.edu/rsfox/invertebrates/narceus.html
And for my french friends (living in Quebec, I do have some… *grin*) I located this very good article about them: http://montoit.cyberpresse.ca/jardinage/articles/2737-Repoussants-mais-inoffensifs-mille-pattes.html
So, harmless but HUGE - what a “cool” bug, eh?

From a Cluttered Desk » Was C. S. Lewis Onto Something?
I just read the above blog post… I’m stunned. I guess I hadn’t given it much thought before… but I know that Ev will be thrilled to hear what it would seem that C. S. Lewis (one of his favourite authors of all time) was onto… !! Go read it for yourself… Tammy is WAY more eloquent than I could ever be… *grin*

What a GREAT DEAL!!! (and more!)
5. May 2008 by Shannon.
CurrClick has a real treat for those who visit their site this week. Of course, every week they offer a free ebook (curriculum or sometimes even a story), but this weeks ebook is really something special! They are offering one of Knowledge Box Central’s Interview Series Lapbooks called “Grandfather’s Wisdom“. What a treat! This lapbook is designed to help your child glean the wisdom of his/her grandfather and to compile it in a neat way that will certainly become a keepsake to treasure! Summer is coming, lots of “family time” to work on it. Why not make it a summer project? The ebook is regularly priced at 24.99$ but you can get it FREE this week only at CurrClick! Don’t miss out!!!
OH! And something really neat has happened here in our homeschool (well, for Mom anyhow *grin*) - Steven David Horwich, author of the Connect the Thoughts course recently sent an email out to several hundreds of people who had signed up for his newsletter - and a little known Yahoo Group exploded!! My friend Stephanie and I, who are both using CTT in our homeschool, had started up a Yahoo Group looking to find others using CTT in their homeschools. Well, it was slow going as neither of us is a marketting guru (apparently). But with Steven’s email came a big surprise! He had listed our group on HIS site (http://www.connectthethoughts.net) and our “population” grew… often by the minute! It was a crazy chase to get everyone approved, but I am DELIGHTED to say that everyone started sharing and encouraging from the get-go, and Steph and I have found ourselves exactly what we wanted - Community! Yippee and BIG THANKS go out to all those who joined and of course to Steven and his Webmaster, Ray! If you’re using CTT or would like to know more, I encourage you to check out the official site and you are also welcome to join our little (but growing!) Yahoo Group too at http://groups.yahoo.com/connectthethoughts .
What a whirlwind week - the Ultimate Homeschool Expo is over (phew! What a ride!!!) … BUT NOT REALLY! I’m seriously going to talk to Cindy about renaming this amazing event to the Ultimate Forever Parenting Online Convention… or something equally appropriate! I was talking to a friend of mine about it, who doesn’t homeschool and I was trying to explain how this isn’t just for homeschoolers, and it isn’t over! Not only have all the sessions been recorded and will be available on the Members Site, but they aren’t just audios for homeschoolers. These are really audios for great parents (LIKE YOU!). There is everything on there from bringing up Godly children to Planning for your future to spiritually uplifting talks like God is Sufficient. And all the “homeschool” related talks are equally appropriate for those who are involved in their children’s education in the public system, or could I even say, for public school teachers to learn how to intill the love of learning in their students?! So don’t feel like you have missed the “ticket”… you haven’t! And if you buy it now, you’ll get the “convention” price of only 40$ (soon it’ll be repriced at 99$ - so don’t delay!!). Go grab your ticket here:

Now - one last thing (I saved it as your “dessert”)… KENZI was in a THEATRE production this week!! Okay, it was a homeschooler play, but I am SO proud of my BIG girl!!! She’s so shy, and overcame many obstacles to play the part of one of the narrators (which meant she was on the stage the entire 45 minutes while the play was being performed). She was dressed as an “ancient greek” because the play was an adaptation of several of Aesop’s Fables (written by Gerald Murphy - which I got a kick out of because that is also my uncle’s name… LOL). The whole cast did amazing and I was so proud of them! It was directed by Melanie Doerr and was performed at the Hudson Village Theatre. Well done everyone! (psst… that’s Kenzi on the left with her little narrator friend who, in my opinion, was the funniest member of the cast hands down! “Don’t ask ME - ask AESOP!” HAHAHA!)
Have an ABUNDANTLY blessed day!

IT IS SPRING!!!!
17. April 2008 by Shannon.
YES! Spring has finally SPRUNG (even here in Quebec!)!!!! The kids “escaped” yesterday and brought me home probably the only three flowers in my lawn brave enough to peek their heads through the snow… I love Spring! Here’s a picture of the one Kenzi brought me… unfortunately the Littles’ flowers didn’t “make it”… *wink* Pretty, huh? (btw, it was VERY tiny… that’s the grain of the wood of my desk under it.. I got a reeaaaaaallly close up shot - I love my camera!)

One of my FAVOURITE (and sometimes least favourite as I will explain later) parts of Spring is SPRING PLANNING! That’s when all next year’s stuff gets planned out (okay, loosely) and books are planned to be purchased. It is when I seek out inspiration and encouragement more than ever, because… (which brings me to my LEAST favourite part) I really hate the End Of Year drudgery.
We always are just dragging along - trying to get all our “things” finished, when really what we want to be doing is going OUTSIDE - as you’ve seen above ^^.
SO… in the spirit of motivating MYSELF to get into the Spring PLANNING and less into the END OF YEAR (and to help past the avoidance issue of going out to play instead) mentality… I would like to share with you a resource from the “sneak peek” on the membership site of the Ultimate Homeschool Expo for this year. After the postive response I got from the last set I shared with you, I got Cindy’s permission to share another little “freebie” with you - she really can relate - she’s in the process of preparing for her second homeschool graduation with her sweet daughter, Elisabeth (her son graduated a couple years back, and in fact is graduating again THIS WEEK from his Basic Training for the MILITARY! Way To Go Matthew!!!). She’s been there, she’s got it all figured out (okay, not all the answers, but, Boy, is she good!)
So, without further blah blah from me, here’s HER description of this FREE gift! This is an ebook AND an audio set to help you get all “orgamanized” - and remember, there are LOTS more free gifts when you sign up for your own ticket to the Ultimate Homeschool Expo - in fact, a whole “Mommy Grab Bag”!!!!

Ultimate Homeschool Expo
8. April 2008 by Shannon.
My very dear friend, Cindy Rushton (okay, I’m just name dropping now, aren’t I? *grin* But, yes, she is my friend!!) has something incredible to offer YOU!
For the second year in a row, she’s put together the Ultimate Homeschool Expo! It’s like a convention that comes to YOU… no driving, no hotels, no parking problems, no crowded vendor halls to navigate… and what’s BEST???? NO MISSED WORKSHOPS! Seriously! That was my biggest pet peeve when I would go to Homeschool Conventions, wanting to hear Speaker A speak at the same time block as Speaker B was speaking who I really wanted to hear too… and not all sessions are recorded. It was very frustrating!
Cindy has found a solution…. clever little cookie that she is!
A Homeschool Convention that comes into YOUR home on YOUR time. So, while you are washing the dishes, you can be listening in to the seminar of your choice, or maybe in the wee hours while rocking a little one to sleep… or how about some “grown up” car listening? That’s when I listen to Cindy the most, while “car schooling”. Her sweet southern accent and inspirational words just take all the road rage right out of me… *big grin*.
There are over 90 workshops given by literally dozens of speakers!!! If you could listen to just two a week, you’d be inspired ALL YEAR LONG (actually LONGER!)! How’s that for a deal and a half… and what’s even better is you get even more goodies than just workshops, you get a Mommy Grab Bag full of incredible treats and deals, you get “door prizes” (this is the most fun part, especially when you are listening in live, and POP! Up comes another treat! Yippee!), and when you participate live, you can even ask QUESTIONS … yes, you can get the answers you are looking for in a uplifting, inpiring, and encouraging environment!!! I can’t imagine our homeschool without the blessings Cindy has poured into it. And now… YOU can get to know MY friend too!
Come join us at the Ultimate Homeschool Expo! There are MANY free preview chats, some this very week, and then the BIG week… well, it’s enough to make your head and heart SOAR with ideas and inspiration! Go check out her UHSE page TODAY! You won’t regret it!!!
Blessings!
PS, Cindy just sent me this freebie to pass on to YOU! (she how generous she is??? How can you not like a friend like that, eh?)
This is a sampler of one of her free gifts that is included on the Membership Site. I am so excited to give it to you! It is a audio and ebook set that she actually sells on her website, but she is giving away on the Membership Site. Here is the link:

SUCCESS!
3. April 2008 by Shannon.
Well, sometimes God just makes me laugh. He knows our struggles so well, and is already sending “help” before we’ve even asked for it. I was so stressed out last week - ready even to call it quits… when along came Help. I stumbled upon a really unique curriculum that was just too revolutionary. I was hesitant to start something new, but seeing as we were finished up Egypt, and really ready to go on to something new and as McKenzie had declared an all out strike at my plans… I figured a change of pace couldn’t hurt.
Oh my goodness…. what a change this week! Okay, things aren’t PERFECT, but they are a dang sight better than what we were doing! I came across a curriculum called “Connect the Thoughts” (CtT). It is completely unique to anything I’ve ever seen before… it gives the student ownership of their own education, in a directed, yet respectful of their individuality way… instead of writing what they need to “regurgitate” or “narrate” or even using “copywork” (which although helped my daughter tremendously in the area of penmanship and her pencil “allergy”…. it certainly wasn’t getting her to think and ponder the things she was studying. CtT does just that… instead of being concerned about the mechanics of writing, it encourages the student to really THINK and PONDER and CONSIDER whta they believe, know and need.
In one week, no - in a few days, I’ve seen such changes in McKenzie. Deeper thoughts, more responsibility, more ownership of her education…
One of the things I’m finding incredible is watching my daughter “own” her education. Today she said the most insightful thing I’ve heard out of her in months…. all related to one of the assignments in her CtT book. She said to me “Mom, this brick wall I drew means that when you rush through your studies, and you just keep going even when you don’t understand something, you are leaving out a brick in your wall… and if you leave out enough bricks, your wall is going to fall down!” And she went on to explain that that was exactly how she felt in public school, like some of her bricks were missing and she felt unstable (in her learning, like she was faking knowing something because everyone else seemed to know it - I reminded her that maybe some of those other people were faking it too… so no one would know unless everyone spoke up).
One of the saddest aspects of my education was not learning how to tell time on an analog clock… I missed that week in grade 2, I guess, anyhow, by the time I figured out everyone else could do it I was too embarrassed to admit I couldn’t… it took a friend to teach me when I was in my early 20’s…
Guess what I make sure my kids learn early? LOL!
One other thing we’ve implemented this week, which has helped as well, has been a “goals” sheet. On Friday evenings, Mom, Dad and Kenzi sit down with a sheet of paper with all her subjects listed on the left side. Beside each subject, she determines (with our guidance) what her weekly goals will be. During the week, she is responsible for her time. I will remind her that it is still school hours and that she should make best use of that time, but I will not tell her WHAT she needs to be working on. She is responsible for her own education - I’m just here to encourage and facilitate. At the end of the week (Friday evening again) she needs to take a little time to review her past week and write on the bottom of the form her self-evaluation - how she felt she did on meeting her goals, including things such as attitude towards her work. Then we go over the work she did that week and Tony and I write our own evaluation notes below her notes. Then she puts that in her notebook, at the begining of that weeks work, and takes a new sheet for the upcoming week.. and she writes her goals for the upcoming week again.
Now, that being said, this is Week One of this new system, but it’s run so smoothly I can’t believe I didn’t do this sooner! I’ve been saying for years that her education is her responsiblity… yet I guess I was too thick-headed to trust her enough with the logistics of her education. It is so much more meaningful to her to be in control of how much or how little she gets done.
Please understand that last sentence though…. she still has minimum requirements… for example, she must do one math lesson a day. SO, in her goals, she can write 5 math lessons OR she can CHOOSE to move along faster, and write 10 math lessons and plan her time to do two math lessons a day (if she were so inclined…. which didn’t happen this week, and I don”t expect to happen any time soon - but there you have it, the option is there, and she’s only really accountable to herself, with us as mentors and encouragers).
I don’t think this would work with a student too young, but I think somewhere around 10 - with guidance - would be a beneficial homeschool addition. After all, if we’re the only ones with any say, then as soon as we stop saying, they’ll stop doing. I want a lifelong learner, and I think ownership and a little CtT might just be the ticket!
I’m so pleased today! :o)
Blessings!

February Blahs
15. February 2008 by Shannon.
This is a tough time of year for school kids… and even homeschool kids! What to do when you’ve been at your lessons for months and months, mom STILL wants more school done, and you’ve been watching the snow fall gently to the ground in soft, fluffy clumps? You stage a revolt!
That is apparently the advice that has been given my little homeschool crowd. I can’t get hardly half an hour’s worth of work before I have to go hunt them out again… they keep slipping away… I think they’re trying to escape! The mountains of snow are calling to them, whispering to them to come out and bring a sled while the day is still clinging to light.
Homeschool in Canada is hard in the winter. It’s just too much fun to be playing outside… how can math, copywork or even sitting around listening to books compete? I’m seriously thinking that maybe next year should start in August and we should take February off instead of spreading vacation over the summer when no one wants to leave the coolness of the house to brave the blackflies and deerflies (double ouch!) to play outside. Maybe we should make the most of that time getting ahead in our lessons and then spend February getting to play outside in the snow all day! I haven’t decided yet… but it might save me a lot of hunting them down and draggin’ them back.
Or, maybe next year I’ll plan a “fun unit” break - I’ll have a planned break from “regularly scheduled homeschool” to stop and do something winter related… maybe I’ll finally tackle some of the awesome winter lapbooks from Hands of a Child (www.handsofachild.com) like Sled Dogs or Snow or even their unit on Polar Habitats (we’re in one, right?) - or better yet, get Dad involved and do a unit on Hockey! We can sled, trek, build snowmen, or snow forts… and drink lots of hot chocolate with marshmallows. Maybe I can do both!
Sounds like a plan to me!
(and now I’m off to hunt them down again… and maybe just for today I’ll get them all bundled up and playing outside while the weather is nice)
Have a fluffy snow day!
